For years, unhappiness plagued me. I have been wondering what is my goal on this Earth and what I could do to help myself in finding a way. I have read various books, talked to many people about the issue. At one point I encountered the book “The Power of Full Engagement” by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz. This book helped me understand why I have such a terribly low energy in life and what I need to do to live a better life. The answer seems to be quite obvious and yes, it is simple but for sure not easy. The authors tell us that we have to re-engage with our lives otherwise we will float around unhappy and without any sort of purpose. Put it differently, if we want a happy and purposeful life, we have to engage the most with our own life.
How do we know whether we are engaged? We are not engaged if we have no energy, finding little to no happiness in our lives and wishing we could get away from it. I am sure you know this feeling when you say “thank God it’s Friday”. The same feeling comes when the only thing you are waiting for in a year is the holiday season. Then the holiday is typically scheduled in the Summer in a place where you go only to have a little sunbathing or simply because somebody else told you it is cool.
Isn’t this normal? What else could there be to life? Good question. Of course, it is normal because most of the people live their lives this way I described above. What this book suggests though is instead of running away from our lives, it is better to turn around. Let’s face our lives and engage it based on the best we imagine for ourselves. Once we make a conscious decision about this, only then will we have a chance to live a happy life.
How to re-engage life then? These two guys, Loehr and Schwarz give us a method to reengage and reenergize. Many people think that it is all about the physical health and condition. Once we get ripped and eat healthily, the world is going drop on its knees in front of us. Most probably this will not happen. What will happen is that we will have even less time for ourselves. We will not even treat ourselves with our favourite burger ever once in a while. We will feel even shittier. Even if we look like a Greek God and will be healthy as a horse, we will still have no purpose. For for this reason, our physical qualities will mean just a tool, with which we seek validation from others.
What to do then? I want to improve my life the following way: I set a purpose, I design one with asking a question: who do I want to be? Easier said than done, I know, but once I have this purpose, I will know what to focus on. Then I will have a system to manage my feelings with and reason that my body could serve. These are exactly the four sources of energy I will focus on. I will start with the most significant ending with the most fundamental:
- Spiritual energy – know your purpose!
- Mental energy – focus!
- Emotional energy – meet challenges!
- Physical energy – fuel the fire!
I have started the full engagement programme already and in this month (May 2017) I will write everything down in this blog. Let’s start with the spiritual level.
